Spring Scholars

Spring Scholars

Spring Scholars spend their Fall semester at a partner institution, a domestic institution, or take a gap semester to work or pursue an internship. If you choose to take classes during your fall semester at an abroad institution, you will have a main point of contact at the institution. If you choose to take courses domestically, there is guidance to help you ensure you are on track to get classes to transfer to Tulane.

Spring Scholars join the Tulane community in January by participating in Hullabaloo Hello (New Student Orientation) and their First-Year Seminar course. Due to winter break and sorority recruitment, this is an abbreviated version of Fall Orientation. You will still receive all of the important information as the students did in the fall, just in an abridged version.

Entry as a Spring Scholar

Entry as a Spring Scholar is determined by admission; there is no application process. Students receive notification about their status as a Spring Scholar with their admission letter.

Any questions about the Spring Scholars program can be directed to Destiny Karash-Givens at dkarashgivens@tulane.edu. Any questions about your admission decisions can be directed to your admission counselor.

Spring Scholar FAQs

No, we do not have access to any platforms other than the systems at Tulane.

You are able to meet with the Program Manager for guidance on classes, assistance in navigating your fall plans, and any other questions you may have.

Partner Institution: You will be provided a list of classes that transfer back to Tulane. You are able to choose classes that are not on that list – but you will be responsible for going through the credit evaluation process to see if the course is eligible for transfer

Domestic Institution: You must enroll in your institution of choice and register for classes. From there, you will email crediteval@tulane.edu with a copy of your unofficial transcript (or other proof of enrollment) and a syllabus for each class you are taking. They will get back to you within 10 business days to let you know if the class is eligible for transfer. This process should be done early in the summer.

All courses must earn a C or above to be eligible for transfer

If you choose not to take courses in the fall semester, that is fine! Keep in mind, you will not be eligible for recruitment and this may set you back a little bit, especially if you are planning on being a STEM or Architecture Major. Speak with the Program Manager about your decision to not take courses to determine if this is the best course of action for your intended major at Tulane.

If you want to go through recruitment when you arrive to campus in the fall, there are a few thing to keep in mind:

  • You must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA with a total of 12 earned credit hours. Only 6 of these hours can be considered from AP/Dual-Credit.
  • Sorority recruitment happens before orientation and you will need to move in earlier than everyone else, thus missing out on a lot of orientation aspects.
  • Fraternity recruitment happens during the first week of school and you will move in the weekend before classes start.
  • National Pan-Hellenic recruitment happens in the fall.
  • See more here to learn more about recruitment.

No, you do not have to go abroad to be considered a spring scholar. In the past, spring scholars have done everything from go abroad, take classes domestically, work, internships, and take gap semesters. Choose whatever option you think works best for you as you enter into college.
