New Student Checklist
Your TU Do List
To support your transition to campus, we have created a "TU Do" list of important tasks to complete throughout the summer. We highly encourage you to review the checklist at the start of each month for a reminder of approaching action items and deadlines.
- Check your Tulane email regularly.
- Complete the May New Student Module: Make Way for Exploration.
- May 8: Deadline to complete the housing application and the optional Residential Learning Community (RLC) application on the Housing Portal. You will be notified of your housing assignment via your Tulane email by mid-July. Questions? Contact Housing and Residence Life.
- Review the Incoming Student advising page.
- Identify your primary major or academic interest areas. (Hint: It can be changed, but what is pulling you in currently?)
- Look for and complete incoming registrar survey to identify academic interest for pre-registration activity this summer. (Some populations of students will register differently; see incoming student page).
- Complete the application for academic and housing accommodations. Request Accommodations through the Goldman Center for Student Accessibility and submit any necessary documentation. Your provider may use the Provider Form. Questions? Contact the Goldman Center.
- Check with the Technology Connection campus store for back-to-school computer specials with promotions from Apple ® and Microsoft Surface products. Tech Connect also has a loaner and repair program for students. For more information, go to: techconnect.tulane.edu
- Check your Tulane email regularly.
- Complete the June New Student Module: Make Way for Connections.
- Watch for “Welcome to Advising at Tulane” email from first year advising team.
- Register for June or July summer advising appointment (Top Scholars, Altman Scholars, Student Athletes, and Transfer students will not need to attend these sessions).
- Complete the pre-advising checklist (found in the May New Student Module) prior to your summer advising appointment.
- Complete your Advising Registration Worksheet to help advisors know more about your interests.
- Complete your Foreign Language placement if you might take a language in your first semester.
- June 3-18: Request a roommate through the Housing Portal.
- June 3: The Dining Plan Portal opens. Please review or change your dining plan. The last day to change your dining plan without being charged a fee is August 22. After the deadline, you can make changes until August 29, but with change fees added. For more info, go to: https://tulane.campusdish.com/DiningPlans.
- June 16: Newcomb-Tulane College Undergrad Book Bundle scholarship application opens.
- Mid-June: Check your email for information on how to ship items to Tulane for in-room delivery during move-in. New students and families will also receive this information via mail. We strongly recommend using the shipping portal. All residential students are assigned a campus mail code to manage mail, which is included in the mail packet. Please save your mail code for future reference.
- June 20: You will receive your Splash Card in your check-in packet when you arrive on campus for move in. Upload your Splash Card / Tulane ID photo as soon as possible to ensure you receive your Splash Card during check-in.
- Check your Tulane email regularly.
- Complete the July New Student Module: Make Way for Community.
- Order all AP/IB credits to be sent to Tulane.
- July 12: Complete your summer advising appointment.
- July 15: Review schedule and make additional changes beginning July 15th.
- Mid-July: Required Wellness Courses Available - Check your Tulane email for instructions on completing five required online wellness courses about alcohol, sexual violence prevention, mental wellbeing, sexual health and sexual literacy. You have until August 18 to finish these online courses.
- July 15: Immunization Compliance Deadline - This is the deadline to submit your completed Tulane immunization compliance form and/or vaccine records via the Patient Portal. Tulane must have evidence of a student’s compliance with the state guidelines for immunizations. Failure to meet these requirements will result in a registration hold being placed on your student account, which will bar you from dropping or adding classes in the Fall semester and/or enrolling for Spring semester classes.
- July 18: Eligible Newcomb-Tulane College students will receive an email from the Tulane bookstore about the NTC Undergrad Bundle. Students should respond to this email immediately and select pickup or delivery so that their course materials and books will be ready on the first day of classes. Please remember the NTC Undergrad Bundle includes digital materials and is not a-la-carte. For more information, go to: https://campusservices.tulane.edu/bookstore/course-materials
- Late July/early August: If you have ongoing mental health needs or concerns, connect with a community therapist or psychiatrist before arriving in New Orleans. Contact the CAPS Care Coordinator if you need assistance connecting with a local provider.
- Review your Move-In guide once published this summer prior to moving onto campus.
- Check your Tulane email regularly.
- Complete the August New Student Module: Make Way for Hullabaloo Hello.
- Transfer your prescriptions to our on-campus Pharmacy.
- August 15: Health Insurance Action Deadline - This is the deadline for domestic students to either enroll in or opt out of the Tulane-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (T-SHIP). If you do not take action by this date, you will be automatically enrolled in T-SHIP, and the non-refundable premium will be charged to your account. No action is required for newly enrolled international students, as you will be automatically enrolled in T-SHIP.
- August 18: Completion Deadline for Required Wellness Courses - Before the first day of classes, August 18, you will need to have completed the five required online wellness courses that were introduced in July.
- Become familiar with the shuttles and transportation options at Tulane. Options include buses between campuses and on-demand transportation to and from designated areas. For more info, go to: shuttles.tulane.edu.
- Become familiar with parking at Tulane. Undergraduate students who are in their second year and above can purchase a parking permit through Tulane Parking Services. First-year students are not permitted to park on campus. All other students may register for a digital parking permit for uptown.
- Uptown parking permits will be available mid-August. Be sure to purchase one before your arrival when availability is announced. To learn more about uptown parking permits, go to: campusservices.tulane.edu/departments/parking/uptown.
- August 22: The last day to change your dining plan without being charged a fee is August 22. After the deadline, you can make changes until August 29, but with change fees added. For more info, go to: https://tulane.campusdish.com/DiningPlans.
- August 29: You can still make changes to your dining plan by this date, but you will be charged change fees added. For more info, go to: https://tulane.campusdish.com/DiningPlans.
- August 29: This is the last day to opt out of the NTC Undergrad Bundle with the Tulane bookstore. If you are considering opting out of the NTC Undergrad Bundle, the Tulane bookstore recommends that you first calculate the possible level of savings on textbooks and course materials very closely. Many students have opted out then opted back in once they realized their level of savings. And remember: if you opt-out, you will have to pay for full retail costs for digital materials, separately. If you don’t return your books at the end of the semester, you may be charged full retail costs and the bundle fee. For more information, go to: https://campusservices.tulane.edu/bookstore/course-materials.
In New Orleans, the word "lagniappe" means something extra. Below are some extra tasks to explore prior to your arrival on campus:
- Review the NTC Honor Code, otherwise known as the Code of Academic Conduct, to understand academic expectations prior to the first day of classes.
- Review the Housing and Residence Life Community Living Standards.
- Looking for a job on campus? All student employment opportunities are posted on Handshake. We also hold a Student Job Fair in the first week of classes. Remember to bring original documents (passport, SS card, or Birth Certificate) with you to campus to complete your I-9. You won’t be able to start working without one. Copies cannot be accepted. Visit Student Employment’s website for more information.
