Get to know FY5 Ian

Hi! My name is Ian Raines (he/him) and I’ll be part of the First-Year Five for the 2025-2026 school year. I’m from Tappan, NY, about 30 miles north of NYC. I’m in the Altman Program in International Studies & Business and am currently doing a dual degree in Anthropology and Marketing.

On campus, I’m treasurer of the Tulane Debate Team and I’m a member of the Rock-Climbing Club. I also play intramural sports at Tulane, mainly volleyball and dodgeball, but I’m up to play anything! In my free time, I love to watch TV, read, and attend sports games (especially Tulane football- Roll Wave!). I’m also a sucker for free stuff and am really excited for more giveaways at Tulane games and Mardi Gras in the spring.

My favorite part about Tulane is all the fun events hosted on campus like TUCP events (concerts, comedians, etc.) and Crawfest. Everything’s free for students and easily accessible. My favorite part about New Orleans is the warm weather and how easy it is to go check out the city using public transportation like the streetcars and buses (which you can ride for $1.25).

My biggest piece of advice for first-years students is to do EVERYTHING you can! As long as you are interested in something, even if you have no friends interested in doing it too, you should attend, and I promise you’ll meet new people and make new friends there while maybe also finding a new passion.
